What Is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is the process by which a protective and decorative coating is applied onto a metal surface and then bonded to that surface by heat treatment. Powder coating is used for a wide range of industrial, commercial and domestic applications, such as fencing, office furniture, security screens, aluminium windows/doors, light poles, supermarket shelving, garden furniture, garage doors and many other metal products.

While powder coating has been around for over 30 years, it is steadily overtaking the messy and labour intensive wet paint process.

Powder coating is an environmentally friendly alternative to solvent based paints (and in some cases plating). The powder is made of dry, finely ground organic resins and pigments and applied by spraying with a gun which electro-statically charges the powder as it exits the tip.
